چکیده

Declines in situation awareness (SA) often accompany automation. Some of these effects have been characterized as out-of-the-loop, complacency, and automation bias. Increasing autonomy in multi-robot control might be expected to produce similar declines in operators’ SA. In this paper we review a series of experiments in which automation is introduced in controlling robot teams. Automating path planning at a foraging task improved both target detection and localization which is closely tied to SA. Timing data, however, suggested small declines in SA for robot location and pose. Automation of image acquisition, by contrast, led to poorer localization. Findings are discussed and alternative explanations involving shifts in strategy proposed. Keywords-human-robot interaction; robot teams; situation

Teams for Teams

We are developing a theory for human control of robot teams based on considering how control varies across different task allocations. Our current work focuses on domains such as foraging in which robots perform largely independent tasks. The present study addresses the interaction between automation and organization of human teams in controlling large robot teams performing an Urban Search and...

Teams for Teams Performance in Multi-Human/Multi-Robot Teams

The present study addresses the interaction between automation and organization of human teams in controlling large robot teams performing an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) task. We identify three subtasks: perceptual visual search for victims, assistance teleoperation to assist robot, and navigation path planning and coordination. For the studies reported, navigation was selected for automatio...

Human vs. Algorithmic Path Planning for Search and Rescue by Robot Teams

Substantial automation will be needed to allow operators to control the large teams of robots envisioned for search and rescue, perimeter patrol, and a wide variety of military tasks. Both analysis and research point to navigation and path planning as prime candidates for automation. When operators are isolated from robot navigation, however, there may be loss of situation awareness (SA) and di...

Situation Awareness and Task Performance in Robot-Assisted Technical Search: Bujold Goes to Bridgeport

This article reports on a field study conducted in 2002 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where 28 multi-operator single robot (MOSR) teams were videotaped as they teleoperated a rescue robot through an apartment in a collapsed building in search of a victim mannequin. Team communication analysis was conducted using the Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue Coding Scheme (RASAR-CS), in conjunction with th...
